A nationwide strike encompassing bus, truck, and tanker drivers across India was recently concluded following protests against the implementation of a new law addressing Hit-and-Run accidents.
The protest, lasting three days, was sparked by the introduction of a law prescribing a fine of 7 lakhs or a 10-year imprisonment term. This development resulted in a subsequent price hike across the country once the strike concluded. Shockingly, around fifty thousand lives are lost annually due to Hit-and-Run incidents, prompting the government to draft a new law aimed at reducing fatalities, replacing the antiquated 'Indian Penal Code' from the colonial era.
The All India Motorist Transport Congress played a pivotal role in the protests, vehemently opposing the legal provisions that prompted the government to invoke these laws.
